Welcome Back!

Welcome back to UM. Hopefully by now you have all settled into your classes and are ready to begin the new semester! I have several announcements for you:

*   Our FIRST MEETING of the semester will be this Monday, January 24th, in the UC Ballrooms. It will be a short first meeting back and we would greatly appreciate your attendance to confirm that we have your correct information, and distribute important information about upcoming CERT activities.

*   As a reminder of our attendance policy, please see the attendance worksheet posted under “Member Responsibilities –> Attendance Policy” to assist you in keeping track of the meetings (all attendance will also be posted by our administration team on Blackboard).

*   If you would like to see the After Action Report for the CERT full-scale exercise that was conducted on December 4th, 2010, please e-mail me at president@umcert.com.

*   Last, but certainly not least, please see below regarding the new Ready South Florida regional preparedness campaign. Please help support preparedness in the UM Community and feel free to e-mail friends and family this important preparedness information:

Do you care about the safety and well-being of your family, loved ones, and friends?  Have you helped them prepare for disasters by encouraging them to get a kit, make a plan, and be informed?  Do you need a place to direct them to get easy to understand information on what they can do to prepare?

Ready South Florida is a regional campaign designed to promote the importance of preparedness in our community!

Encourage your family, loved ones, and friends to learn more about how to prepare by visiting our website by clicking HERE. Also, follow us on Facebook to receive preparedness tips and facts!

Thank you for supporting preparedness in our community!

See you all on Monday!

Happy Holidays!

From all of us here at UM CERT, we wish you and your families a very happy and safe holiday season.

See you in the New Year!

Relay for Life 2011

It seems far away now, but Relay for Life, an annual fundraiser sponsored by the American Cancer Society, is coming this April 2011.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 18 – 24 hours in length.

Did you know that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 2 men will face cancer in their lifetime? That’s why, this year and every year, UM CERT takes part in the American Cancer Society Relay For Life at the University of Miami, and our hope is that you will support us.
Please support our team by clicking the lick on the side panel to the right – Support our team at Relay for Life!

We sincerely thank you, in advance, for any amount contribution that you can donate.

Upcoming Meeting

Hey CERT-ers:

Get prepared for our upcoming general meeting this coming Monday, November 22nd at 9pm in LC 110. We will be have our yearbook photo taken, so please wear your CERT shirt to the meeting. This will be our last official general meeting of the semester!

If you have not already done so, please sign up for the end of the semester Disaster Readiness Exercise at the link below:

CERT Symposium

T entire symposium is currently open for participant registration. You MUST sign up for the Disaster Readiness Exercise on Sunday, December 5th (afternoon). However, there are many interesting classes on Friday and Saturday and I welcome you to sign up for them, as well. Included will be courses about the Incident Command Structure, a CPR & AED certification class, a crime prevention course, a CERT Train-the-Trainer class (CERT T-T-T; after taking this class, you’ll be certified to teach the CERT basic training class – consider this if you’d like to be involved with the executive board in the future and if you have time to take the class), and many more! If you can only sign up for the DRE, that’s fine, the rest of the courses are up to you. Keep in mind that elsewhere you may have to pay a hefty registration fee to attend a CERT T-T-T class or a CPR & AED class, but here, all of the Symposium events and classes are completely free of charge.

To register:
- Go to the site listed above
- CLICK THE LINK directly in the center of the page that says “Register Online”
- Then take a look at the offered courses and the times at which they are taking place
- Scroll to the bottom on the page and click the BLUE BUTTON that says “Register Here”
- Fill out the information and submit– ** On the registration sheet, they ask for your “Title”,  if you are a general member, simply type in general member; for the “Agency/Organization” put UM CERT

We encourage you to take the courses offered since the opportunity does not come often. Some of the courses overlap with each other, so please be aware of the start and end times of each course. Again if you are potentially interested in training or possibly want a higher position on CERT in the future, the CERT Train-the-Trainer class is an excellent class to help further yourself in CERT. BUT BE ADVISED that you must take both day 1 and day 2 of this course; these two courses conflict with the majority of the other classes –> choose carefully!

Also you MUST sign up for the DRE on Sunday, failure to do so will result in an “inactive” status regardless of your reason why you cannot attend. We cannot make exceptions because it is a University rule.

If you cannot attend the DRE, please email administration@umcert.com

I look forward to seeing you all there. We’ll see you at the beginning of Spring 2011 for our first general meeting of the semester on January 24th at 9pm in the UC Ballrooms.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving break and Happy Holidays!

Elsie
